CSIR-Institutes Lucknow Visit of B.Tech. BI & BME Department

Department of Bioinformatics and Biomedical Engineering, SRM University, Haryana provides four year B.Tech course in the area of Bioinformatics and Biomedical Engineering subjects, respectively. As per course curriculum, university has organised a scientific visit for the IInd, IIIrd and IVth year students at three national research institutes of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), India: Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI), Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (IITR) and Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plant (CIMAP) CSIR at Lucknow. The purpose of this scientific visit was to encourage our young students towards the science and research in their academic carrier. Bioinformatics and Biomedical Engineering is two important subjects that are highly applicable in the area of applied research of biology and medicine. To get about the knowledge, current status in India and the future perspective of these cutting edge research areas among the students, university selected these three pioneer research institutes of the India.

This was four day visit (From 06.11.17 to 09.11.17) during which students visited three research institutes at Lucknow: CDRI, IITR and CIMAP.
Visit at CDRI: This institute in one of the top research institute in the world having theme of the research and development of new drugs for different kinds of diseases. The research focuses on the formulation of novel drugs from the plant and herbal products.
Here students visited at the various labs that are engaged in designing and discovery of novel drugs, through invivo and insilico approaches. Students get familiar with evolution of drug development in India. From visit of Dr. R Ravishankar lab, students gets familiar with basic science and details of structural features of proteins that needed to be consider for the structure analysis of protein and drug discovery. Here students also learnt about the details of mechanism of crystallography. While from visit of Dr. M I Siddiqi lab, students came to know about various methods, tools and techniques for the drug designing. This session was very helpful for the students as they came to know the strength and application of bioinformatics and computational biology and get motivated towards the research area of drug discovery. Students also get familiar with the high throughput techniques and instruments, such as NMR, that are only available at limited research institutes and CDRI is one of them. Dr. S K Shukla and Dr. K Mitra, at NMR analytical instrument facility, described the application details of NMR for the quantification of novel drugs and molecules.
Visit at IITR: The main focus of this institute is to study the effect and application of toxicology in the biological systems. They directly implicate the life style of human being.
Here students get familiar with the application of toxicology in the concern of general public health. Here, students also interacted with the students and research scholars that were working on various projects. Dr P K Sharma, from environmental carcinogenesis division, gave the details about the various projects that are going in the area of toxicology. Dr Sandeep Sharma gave the details about the computational chemistry and bioinformatics that have been applied at various projects going at IITR. Further, he also brief about the projected research plan at IITR. From this visit, students get encouraged and came up with new ideas about the various applied field of the research in the area of medicine and toxicology.
Dr K C Khulbe, from research planning and business development program, interacted with the students and details about the various programs, such as skill development program, that have been organizing at IITR for the undergraduate students and offered our students to join these programs.
Visit at CIMAP: This institute is one of the national importance that largely focus on the research and development to study, synthesis and exploit the huge diversity of flora of India, in context of medicine and aromatics. This institute has also been engaged in the development of new formulations mainly from the various medicinal herbs and plants for the general public health.
Here students learnt and get familiar about the various sophisticated methods for the extraction and formulation of different medicinal and aromatic compounds from herbs and shrubs. Students visited to the different Pilot Plant projects that are engaged in the processing, extraction and quantification of natural medicinal and aromatic compounds. The team at Pilot plant project brief about the various fractionation unit and their application. Students learn the concepts and methodologies of various distillation methods that have been applying at the CIMAP. Further, they also get familiar with the phenotypes of various important medicinal and aromatic plants that are using in day to day life. They also came up with idea about the application of their subject in the research field of medicinal and aromatic plants.
Here students also came to know about various skill development programs and how that will be benefited for them. They also get offer to join these programs.
Major achievement from this visit
Overall, students learned the application of various methods and techniques that are mentioned in their courses and syllabus. Further, they get enriched with the cutting edge research projects that are going in the area of computational biology and biomedical engineering along with others at these national institutes. At the same time, students get motivated towards the research carrier in the area of bioinformatics and biomedical engineering. With this visit, students get opportunity to get offer to join various skill enhancement program at these reputed institutes. Having these skills they will have plenty of opportunity in their carrier after their graduation. Hope, with this scientific visit, students will come up with the new ideas, innovations that will encourage them and acts as the basis to helps them in their academic and research carrier.
