Introduction

The Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering & Technology, SRM University, Delhi-NCR, Haryana, organized a two-day industrial visit to the National Power Training Institute (NPTI), Nangal, Punjab, on 30 September and 1 October 2026. A total of 33 students from the second and third years of the B.Tech. Mechanical Engineering programme participated in the visit, accompanied by Dr. Deepak Kumar and Dr. Pawan Sharma.

The visit was organized to provide students with practical exposure to power-sector operations, industrial engineering practices, and the application of mechanical engineering principles in real-world environments. It also aimed to strengthen the connection between theoretical concepts taught in the classroom and their practical implementation in industrial settings.

Objectives of the Visit

The major objectives of the industrial visit were:

  • To familiarize students with the activities, facilities, and technical training infrastructure of NPTI, Nangal.
  • To develop an understanding of power generation systems and energy conversion processes.
  • To provide exposure to mechanical equipment, systems, and technologies used in the power sector.
  • To understand the importance of industrial safety, equipment maintenance, reliability, and operational efficiency.
  • To relate classroom concepts from thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and thermal engineering to practical industrial applications.
  • To enhance students’ technical knowledge and awareness of career opportunities in the power and energy sectors.

Activities and Learning Experience

During the two-day visit, students gained valuable exposure to the technical and operational aspects of the power sector. The visit enabled them to understand the role of mechanical engineering in power generation, energy conversion, equipment operation, maintenance, and industrial safety.

The major learning areas included:

Power Generation and Energy Conversion

Students developed an understanding of the fundamental principles and processes involved in energy conversion and electricity generation, thereby gaining practical context for concepts studied in thermal and energy-related engineering courses.

Mechanical Equipment and Systems

The visit provided students with an opportunity to appreciate the role of mechanical components, equipment, and auxiliary systems in power-sector applications and their contribution to reliable plant operation.

Operation and Maintenance

Students were introduced to the significance of preventive maintenance, equipment reliability, condition monitoring, and operational efficiency in ensuring the safe and continuous functioning of industrial facilities.

Industrial Safety

The visit enhanced students’ awareness of safety practices, procedures, and the importance of maintaining safe working conditions in technical and industrial environments.

Practical Application of Engineering Concepts

The industrial exposure helped students connect theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom with practical engineering applications, thereby strengthening their conceptual understanding through experiential learning.

The faculty members, Dr. Deepak Kumar and Dr. Pawan Sharma, accompanied the students throughout the visit and facilitated their academic engagement and learning.

Conclusion

The two-day industrial visit to the National Power Training Institute (NPTI), Nangal, Punjab, held on 30 September and 1 October 2026, was successfully organized by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering & Technology, SRM University, Delhi-NCR, Haryana. A total of 33 students from the second and third years of the B.Tech. Mechanical Engineering programme participated in the visit under the guidance of Dr. Deepak Kumar and Dr. Pawan Sharma.

The visit provided students with meaningful exposure to power-sector operations and demonstrated the practical relevance of mechanical engineering concepts in industrial applications. It also enhanced their understanding of equipment, maintenance, operational efficiency, and industrial safety while providing valuable insight into career opportunities in the energy sector.

Such industrial visits serve as an important component of experiential learning by enabling students to observe engineering practices beyond the classroom, develop greater technical awareness, and prepare themselves for future professional responsibilities.
